How to Convert AVI to MP4 on Windows 11/10

AVI files can be difficult to share or play on newer devices. This guide shows how to convert AVI to MP4 on Windows 11 or Windows 10 with a local desktop workflow, including the output settings that matter and fixes for common conversion problems.

Converting an AVI video to MP4 on a Windows 11 desktop

Quick answer: Open All Free Video Converter, add the AVI file, choose an MP4 preset, select the output folder and start conversion. When it finishes, play the exported MP4 and check both picture and sound before deleting the original.

You need only:

Now, let's get started.

Step 1: Install and Open the Video Converter

Download All Free Video Converter, complete the Windows installation and open the program. Keep your original AVI file until you have checked the converted result.

All Free Video Converter supports the video conversion of various kinds. It releases you from waiting with batch process and post process options. Download, install & launch All Free Video Converter now to try the simplest conversion ever.

Double-click the icon to launch the program.

Step 2: Add the AVI Video

Choose Add Video and select the AVI file. You can add several AVI files if you want to process a batch. Confirm that each file appears in the conversion list before continuing.

Tip: After you input a video file, you will see the thumbnails of it, which is the middle frame of the video; but no matter how many audio files of different formats you input, you can only see the same green icon with a musical note on it.

Step 3: Choose MP4 Output Settings

Choose the output folder, open the Video formats and select To MP4. For broad playback compatibility, start with an MP4 preset using H.264 video and AAC audio when available. Keep the original frame rate and resolution unless you specifically need a smaller file.

Tip: There is specification of each preset and the advanced users could check the configuration and choose the one that best suits the needs; for a casual user, the default preset of each format works for most situations.

Step 4: Convert and Verify the MP4

Click Convert and wait until the queue is complete. Open the exported MP4 and check the beginning, middle and end. Confirm that audio is synchronized and that the picture orientation and quality are correct.

Tip: Our program converts the files in the queue one after another and takes less time to get a result. The batch conversion here does not mean simultaneously converting all the input files as that takes up much system resource & actually lowers the whole conversion and leads to poor quality - imagine this: you have spent 30 minutes to convert several large files simultaneous and none of them is finished yet. Suddenly an error occurs and the program is not responding so that you have to end the process. Oops, you've waited half an hour for nothing!

AVI to MP4 FAQ

Does this method work on Windows 11?

Yes. The current desktop download supports Windows 11 and Windows 10.

Can I convert AVI to MP4 by renaming the extension?

No. Renaming .avi to .mp4 does not change the video container or codecs. A converter must create a new MP4 file.

Will converting AVI to MP4 reduce quality?

Re-encoding can introduce some loss. Use a quality preset close to the source resolution and frame rate, and avoid repeatedly converting the same video.

Can I convert multiple AVI files?

Yes. Add multiple files to the queue, review the output settings and process them in sequence.
